Billboard Made of Lettuce Grows On You

billboard made from salad photo

Dare we say that we actually like something from McDonalds? It's a billboard that was set up in Chicago last fall to promote their "health conscious" menu, and just won a Gold Award for Leo Burnett at the Innovative Advertising Awards.

Fast Food News (a prime TreeHugger source of breaking news) says "the creative team worked closely with a horticulturalist to create a billboard that could start with 1½-inch spouts and grow into lush leaves. The garden appears to be safe from being plucked apart by birds because there is no place for them to perch and peck."

Video of it growing (in fast motion) below the fold.

Good Job McDonalds

jump to top steve says:

No! It's a big ugly billboard that 99% of the time has some garish advertising blight in the middle of the city.
There are no acceptable billboards!
Please rethink your position!

Well, it definitely is innovative, but won't it all end up going to waste? Agreed, most people won't want to eat anything that's been up in a billboard, but perhaps they could still find a use for it...?

jump to top Deepa says:

Yeah, I hate to admit that I like this too. Still wouldn't eat a salad from there, though!

jump to top Kim says:

Fast Food News clearly is unaware that birds do not eat green leaves.

Cool. A Chia-billboard.

I guarantee you that whoever McDonalds contracted to put that up is not responsible for taking it down (usually the job of the billboard service) but if they are it will not be harvested and distributed to little needy children or whatnot, they'll throw it into the dumpster with the rest of the materials they needed to create the money-making advertisement. That dumpster will go to a landfill where the lettuce decomposes away, totally wasted, at an anaerobic rate.

GREENWASHING!!!!! people!

I'm glad that McDonalds is making some changes but until they switch to whole grain buns without chemicals, stop using hydrogenated oils, High Fructose Corn Syrup and other toxic non-food items, I can't see myself eating there. Also their beef and poultry has hormones, antibiotics and is raised on GMO feed so if you eat animal products, I would think twice about visiting this place, especially if you have kids.

Be well....

Geez, get some perspective. Who thinks they're implying the greens will be harvested and eaten? It's just a cute marketing gimmick. I like it. That doesn't mean I'll ever like McDonalds.
To Deepa and others who think its a waste, lettuce is easy to grow, it's no more wasteful to throw it out then the thousands of pounds of other vegetables that are getting thrown out every day from stores and restaurants, probably just in your town alone. Here its just being used as an innovative material to make a billboard with a particular statement. It's clever and cute, even if it is a sucky evil corporation that produced it.

jump to top myrrh says:

Honestly I love this billboard, it is eye catching and goes far and beyond its purpose, to be innovated and start conversation.

To Paul: news flash most billboard companies do not through biilboards away, they are recycled! DUH.....here is a site that uses the old billboards to produce American made bags (I suggest the shoulder tote, it holds lots) http://www.ecologicdesigns.com/

jump to top Jen says:

Birds do so eat green leaves, especially small fresh sprouts! I have much experience with this from growing a vegetable garden.

I think it's very neat, but will not start buying their salads because of it.

jump to top Sara says:

I have a picture of that same sign being sprayed with pesticides. I sent the pic to Treehugger, but I guess it wasn't story worthy. Maybe it will be now

My wife just pointed out it could be water :)

jump to top Bryan says:

Well, although I hate seeing wasted food of any kind - I like this ad. I don't eat McDonalds and this doesn't do anything to bring me back to the golden arches, but I really do appreciate something about this. Even though the lettuce was undoubtedly thrown away after the sign was taken down, for the time it was up there, they were green, growing plants. That means that they were producing oxygen! When was the last time you could say that about a billboard? McDonalds is going to advertise no matter what, let's all be thankful that for once their advertisement is a breath of fresh air!

jump to top ChipkoCavies says:

Where is the billboard located? Chicago. but what intersection?

jump to top Madeline says:

@ Madeline

It was at the McDonald's at 3620 N Clark beside Wrigley Field.
